Green Screening, April, The Story of Food Waste
Why do you always seem to have more food to throw away than you planned for? What happens to that food after you throw it away?
This April, we’re discussing the topic of Food Wastage: What makes it and why it’s still happening has been an issue for the international community for the last ten years. While many households struggle with the issue of keeping their kids fed, our countries are dealing with trying to balance the food they produce with the food they waste.
Here we have an example of the impact food waste can have on a single economy, reflecting the issues all of us face with food in the future.

The video above demonstrates the conversation of food waste in the Philippines. But the fight to recognize and end food waste isn’t just centered in South East Asia. Every country in the world is discussing “food waste” and “ugly fruits”, an issue of how much food is wasted everyday.
Food waste is a problem shared all around. It effects our economies and health when we waste food, and it hurts our planet when we over farm its land and burn carbon for transporting food only for it to end up in a landfill.
Food wastage is not just poor grocery planning, it is a symptom of a non-circular economy that is built on profiting by producing more waste.

Guest Speaker/
Nadia, a local eco-entrepreneur, returned to China in 2019 after living in Australia for 11 years. In Australia, she studied more about the issues of food waste and the reality of it shocked her. About how much environmental problems it causes apart from the social and economic side of it. She noticed there’re various initiatives abroad on reducing food waste, such as food banks and public policy. She wanted to bring the same passion for community-based action back to her local community in Kunming.
Her own solution was to go local, she always believed running an environmental business in a commercial form could a sustainable and effective way. After researching her community and resources, she founded Kunming Zero Waste Technology Company, and to work with high end hotels on saving their perfect surplus food.
They have redesigned the excess food into take away meals and sell to the public, mainly at the end of buffet service hours while the food is still fresh, at a discounted price. They have now created a mini program to run the order/delivery process that is called the five-star food outlets.
